Lewa Experience

The big 5, including elephants, lions, cape buffaloes, rhinos, and leopards, are found here. Lewa holds the largest population of Grevy’s zebras in the world and eastern black rhinoceros. Frequently encountered at night are leopards, bush babies, foxes, aardvarks, and caracal.

The sanctuary is home to a diverse array of wildlife supporting many game species in the plains perfectly adapted to a semi-desert environment. The reticulated giraffe, the rare Greater kudu, the horned Beisa oryx, Guenther’s dikdik, and the beautiful blue legged ostrich are found here all year round. Birdlife is plenty with several species of plover, bustard, and birds of prey.

Viewing to the south of Lewa is a rising altitude to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. To the north is breathtaking views as the terrain drops away to Ololokwe, Samburu, and Mathew’s range beyond. On numerous occasions, Prince William has visited the area as his natural choice being a keen conservationist.

Tourism and Anti-Poaching

Lewa was a mare cattle ranch, then a guarded black rhino sanctuary, and now the world-famous non-profit wildlife conservancy headquarters. The conservancy houses 9 tourism properties offering intimate, unparalleled conservation-focused safari experience.
