Serengeti
Serengeti ecosystem is an extensive protected area in northern Tanzania, including Serengeti National Park, Olduvai Gorge (oldest hominin fossils were found here), Ngorongoro crater, Simba Kopje, and other game reserves. It hosts the second enormous terrestrial mammal migration natural travel wonder of the world.
Serengeti has a large lion population for view in their natural environment. It’s home to about 500 bird species and 70 large mammals. Besides the great migration, Serengeti is famous for the abundant large predators, including the African leopards, lions, East African cheetah, and spotted hyenas. It hosts diverse grazers such as African Elephant, Cape buffalo, eland, topi, waterbuck, Grant’s gazelle, and warthog.
The circular annual great wildebeest migration starts from southern Serengeti in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, looping clockwise to Serengeti National Park and then northwards to Maasai Mara reserve in Kenya. It’s a natural phenomenon controlled by the availability of grazing. January to March is the initial phase when the calving season begins. The rains end in May, and the animals move northwest to Grumeti River and remain here until late June. Crossings of rivers Grumeti and Mara begin in July, and the crocodiles lay in wait. It’s a popular safari attraction as from July to August, the herds arrive in Kenya and remain there over the dry season.
